After only three months, more than 1,000 signatures have been collected.  The petition itself generates more and more support for protecting trees in the park.  Collection continues at numerous locations.  Although some Blackburn Park supporters want us to try for 2000 signatures, the number collected is not nearly as important as the fact that all these people know about planned tree cutting in the park.  Most of these folks knew nothing about it before the petition attracted their attention. Enotah Family Drug Court

The Enotah Family Drug Court with mandatory treatment and counseling has proven to be amazingly successful at keeping families together when they are about to lose custody of their children to the Department of Family and Childrens’ Services. Twenty young people who live in Lumpkin County are currently enrolled. Since the program began a year ago, no participant has been terminated from the program or been arrested for an alcohol or drug abuse related offense. This is one great success story! Failure to discuss Agenda items during monthly work sessions keeps commissioners and the public in the dark.   Even though we regularly attend county meetings, we find it difficult to find out what is going on.  Based on commissioners different interpretations of their recent vote on petitions, it’s pretty clear that they don’t know what’s going on either.

Enabling Legislation for the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners (BOC) requires a Work Session each month for
commissioners to discuss issues they will vote on at the next scheduled Commission Meeting.  After discussing the issues among themselves during the Work Session, they should be able to speak knowledgeably with constituents about the issues before they have to vote during their regular monthly Commission Meeting.

Unfortunately, the BOC no longer has much discussion during their Work Sessions.  Chairman John Raber has, for the last several months, made an announcement during the Work Sessions that there is no need to discuss most issues on the Agenda because he has already talked with each of the commissioners individually; and they already know what they are going to do.  Continue reading »

This is an unusual number of rabies cases in close proximity to Lumpkin County. If you encounter an animal that appears sick or is acting strangely, do not approach the animal but immediately report it to Animal Control.

This is to advise that on Aug. 17, 2009, in the Green Drive area in North Hall, there was contact between a skunk and three dogs. The skunk was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab – Virology Section in Decatur on Aug. 18. On Aug. 19, the Gainesville-Hall Animal Control Department was advised that the skunk was positive for rabies.
