This is the way I see it.  By Emily Lewy

Chairman John Raber’s efforts to completely control county government continue with each appointment.  He seems confident that appointees will bear allegiance to him instead of the residents and taxpayers of Lumpkin County.

Unfortunately, some of his appointees were not as happy to have the position as he was to give it; and, they don’t attend the meetings.  To resolve the matter, Raber wants a full attendance review of all county appointees. Continue reading »

As  Sheriff Jarrard entered the room for the February 17 Commission Meeting, Chairman Raber greeted him with, “Just what did you have to do to get that article in The Dahlonega Nugget?”  Jarrard replied, “I just answered Sharon’s questions.”

Raber was clearly envious.  The editorial had described what a  great job the sheriff had done.

When jail expenditures came up on the Agenda, Jarrard was allowed to make his case repeating what had been stated in great detail during each of the last several Commission Work Sessions.  This time he was able to point out that he had returned some $450,000 to the County General Fund from his 2009 Budget.  The income had been generated by housing prisoners from other counties. GEFA loan bill sneaks out of Senate committee
    by Tom Crawford on 2/16/2010

Gov. Sonny Perdue’s aides are taking a back-door approach to getting legislative approval of his proposal to raise cash for the budget by selling off loans made by the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority (GEFA).

Language that would authorize GEFA to turn over its loan proceeds to the state treasury was quietly added to a House bill (HB 244) that was originally introduced last year to make a routine change to the authority’s name. Continue reading »

    Hey Coalitioners all,
We had a great meeting and after fest celebration last weekend! Thanks to all of you who were able to come (abt. 35 or so) for bringing your good energy and food:-)   And thanks to Sarah, Etowah, and Selu Adams for providing some fun musical entertainment!!
And thanks to everyone for being part of a highly successful Hemlockfest 2009!
We have voted to donate the spoils of the fest this year to Young Harris College (YHC) and North Georgia College and State University (NGCSU) beetle rearing labs.  It seems University of Georgia (UGA) is ok for the moment due to some grants they are receiving.
YHC will receive a check for $5,000
NGCSU will receive a check for a little more than $9,000
This will leave us with close to $2,000 of restricted use funds in PLAT (the home owners assistance program) and with funds to roll over to help out with next year’s festival!
Very Exciting that even in a tough economic year we came out in a position to contribute significantly to the hemlock saving effort!
Aside from the money aspect, we also were able to get information out to many people through our festival promotion efforts and through our programming and materials at Hemlockfest.
We have received great feedback from folks from all aspects of involvement including volunteers, participants, attendees and even some who just heard about it and are already looking forward to next year!
With more than 100 campers and more than 1000 attendees, everything ran very smoothly and our local sheriff (Stacy Jarrard) even confirmed that there were no reports or incidences related to the festival!
This kind of event could not happen without the combined efforts and visions of many people and it just keeps getting better each year!  I am always astounded at the amount of energy people are willing to volunteer towards such a cause.. and it shows in the group we have!  The Lumpkin Coalition is an expanding family of fantastic folks with energy and vision and drive to make a difference here in North Georgia. Let’s keep it going.. and growing!
    So the hemlocks may live…

Volunteer participation can be used as the county match for a $100,000 grant to improve Blackburn Park.  The county must apply for the grant by November 30.   Since no county funds are available for the required 20% match, the grant cannot be accepted without a commitment for 2200 volunteer hours.
