    The Lumpkin County Parks and Recreation Department and The Georgia Mountains YMCA will hold two public hearings at Park & Rec, 365 Riley Road, Dahlonega to receive comments on the YMCA proposed management of the County Park & Rec programs and operations.

    Lumpkin County is losing out on all taxes from package sales of distilled spirits paid by our residents to other counties.  In this economy, when any tax increase faces great opposition, it is unconscionable that Lumpkin County does not benefit from tax that is already being paid by our residents.

    “Package sales of distilled spirits” is controlled by GA Code Section 3-4-41.  A petition signed by 35% of the registered voters is the only way to have a referendum of the voters to approve package sales. Continue reading »

    HemlockFest is an annual benefit music festival, held on November 5-7, 2010, to increase public awareness and generate funds to help save the eastern and Carolina hemlock trees.  Money raised will be used for support of the Georgia laboratories rearing adelgid-devouring beetles, education and research on the HWA problem, and assisting businesses and homeowners to protect hemlocks on their private property.     U.S. Is Working to Ease Wiretapping on the Internet

    Federal law enforcement and national security officials are preparing to seek sweeping new regulations for the Internet, arguing that their ability to wiretap criminal and terrorism suspects is “going dark” as people increasingly communicate online instead of by telephone.

    Essentially, officials want Congress to require all services that enable communications — including encrypted e-mail transmitters like BlackBerry, social networking Web sites like Facebook and software that allows direct “peer to peer” messaging like Skype — to be technically capable of complying if served with a wiretap order. The mandate would include being able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages.
