    Animal overpopulation creates big problems and costs big money for Georgia citizens.  Even one unsterilized animal can contribute to the overpopulation problem.  The only way we can prevent pet overpopulation and the public cost that goes with it is by education about the costs and benefits of spay/neuter.     The final Public Hearing on the 2011 Lumpkin County Budget will be at 5:00 PM on Thursday, July 15 immediately before the Regular Commission Meeting at 6:00 PM in the Park & Rec building.  Commissioners are expected to vote on the 2011 Budget during that meeting.  A tax increase is anticipated based on prior statements from commissioners.

    The 2nd Public Hearing on the Budget was held at 9:00 AM on Monday morning.  To my surprise a number of folks actually showed up at that time to speak out against a tax increase.  As in the first Public Hearing, the people did not hesitate to make recommendations for cuts.  They clearly expect government employees to share their pain during this recession and they fear the economy will be even worse next year.     Lumpkin County continues to pay for the stupidity of hiring an inexperienced out of county company to build the reservoir trail.  In an effort to respond to recent EPD concerns about dirt from the trail going into the reservoir, Lumpkin County brought in large equipment that further widened the poorly constructed “trail” turning it into a full-fledged dirt road.  Click on the pictures.
